Essentially, the P3P allows users to dictate their interactions with web sites based on the intended usage of information gathered during their visits.
For a complete description of the P3P, refer to the W3C web site. If cookie-based tracking is enabled, this response may include a Set-Cookie directive. For user agents that are P3P-aware such as Internet Explorer 6 , the cookie may be rejected, downgraded, or leashed depending on whether or not the response is deemed innocuous.
This is typically based on the existence of and the values included in a compact policy found in the HTTP response. Note: Internet Explorer 6 takes action on cookies based on the context in which the cookie was sent and on the content of its compact policy. Depending on the situation, Internet Explorer 6 will accept, deny, downgrade, or leash the cookie. A downgraded cookie is a persistent cookie that is deleted when the browsing session ends or the cookie expires, whichever comes first.
A leashed cookie is one that is only sent on requests to download first-party content.
